The tradional dancers are wearing boar’s teeth wristlets and dog teeth anklets that make a rushing sound when the dancers move their feet. The stomp (Ku’i) step in dance produces a thundering sound and thus the sculpture is named Ku’I – Hula’s Thunder.

Hawaiian culture hold Honu in high regard, some feel they are family ancestors, a protector or ‘aumakua. Legend in ancient creation chants tell of supernatural powers that Honu possess. Regarded as guardian or caretaker of the sea, today’s Honu are docile and can be observed by swimmer and snorkelers alike. The Hawaiian Islands maintain Wildlife Refuge areas where these calm creature will emerge from diving for algae off rock, to sun along the water’s edge, The artist depicts a Honu as it launches off the sandy ocean floor causing a whirlpool of magic in motion. When seen through its watery world, a Honu’s carapace, sometimes three feet in length, appears as a multi-color of brilliance in orange, gold, blue, and olive green.
