It is customary to see a Makuakane with his net over his shoulder peering into the waters of the sea, especially at dusk.
This sculpture, cast in bronze, stands approximately 5’ H.

Ku’I – Hula’s Thunder was created in 1983 and cast in bronze in 1984. Joel participated in the hula dancing group that performed Hula Kahiko.
The tradional dancers are wearing boar’s teeth wristlets and dog teeth anklets that make a rushing sound when the dancers move their feet. The stomp (Ku’i) step in dance produces a thundering sound and thus the sculpture is named Ku’I – Hula’s Thunder.

Ku’u – is the companion ancient Hula Kahiko dancer. She is more graceful and compliments her Ku’i partner in dance.
She is dressed as an ancient dancer and therefore is not clothed on the top. This piece can be constructed with a covered bosom if commissioned that way.

This sculpture is done partly in relief and finished with the jutting of the canoe and it’s paddlers extending towards the front.
The relief portion is approximately 12 ft. wide and 10 ft. in height. The background in the relief is of the Hualalai Mountains to the sea. There are several items depicted, a double hull canoe, a whale, dolphins, a turtle all in the sea. The paddlers extend another 12 ft. towards the front and center and is in full three dimension.
This is cast in bronze.

Hawaiian culture hold Honu in high regard, some feel they are family ancestors, a protector or ‘aumakua. Legend in ancient creation chants tell of supernatural powers that Honu possess. Regarded as guardian or caretaker of the sea, today’s Honu are docile and can be observed by swimmer and snorkelers alike. The Hawaiian Islands maintain Wildlife Refuge areas where these calm creature will emerge from diving for algae off rock, to sun along the water’s edge, The artist depicts a Honu as it launches off the sandy ocean floor causing a whirlpool of magic in motion. When seen through its watery world, a Honu’s carapace, sometimes three feet in length, appears as a multi-color of brilliance in orange, gold, blue, and olive green.
The Large Torch Fisherman "Lawelima" is a monument sized bronze sculpture that was privately commissioned. It depicts a fisherman with a torch made of kukui nut meats, and a spear to fish in the twilight hours of the evening. This sculpture stands 10 foot tall. (Molds are still available for this sculpture so it can be reproduced.)

This suite of Thrownet Fisherman depicts the five different stages of the art of throw net fishing. First the net is gathered, then placed in position for throwing, next the school of fish are spotted and the throw net fisherman launches, pulling in the catch and repeating the process.
In the five piece suite, all are cast in a limited edition of 45.

Kana’i – The Conqueror is shown in bronze. He is a warrior, a protector of royalty. His weapon is made of whale bone and is secreted until needed. He wears a “Mahiole” cap of feathers and a cloak of feathers for protection and distinction.
The official name is "Ku Kilakila' and was commissioned by Honolulu Art in Public Places. A bronze 23 foot sculpture mounted on a six foot flag post deemed a cultural monument on the campus of the Baldwin High School campus in Kahului, Maui. This sculpture depicts the past, present, and future, by three people of such generations.
